Where Exactly

One location, two names. Same plaza, same downtown corner.

City Plaza (also called Believe Plaza)

10 N. Virginia Street, Reno, NV 89501

The public plaza around the iconic BELIEVE sign in the heart of downtown, right by the Truckee River. "City Plaza" and "Believe Plaza" are the same location — the City of Reno uses both names interchangeably.

During event hours, portions of Virginia Street are activated as pedestrian space. Flat plaza surface, public seating along the Riverwalk, and a 5-minute walk to dozens of downtown restaurants and bars.

What to Expect

The vibe

Riverfront street-dance block party with DJs, lessons, and performances. Very come-and-go friendly.

Who's there

All ages, families, couples, friend groups, downtown visitors. Locals and tourists mixed.

The layout

Centered on City Plaza at 10 N. Virginia. Activation extends onto Virginia Street; pedestrians take the street during event hours.

Amenities

Open plaza, riverfront seating, dozens of food and drink options within a 5-min walk. No on-site ticketing or registration needed.

Locals' Playbook

Park at Whitney Peak garage, Cal Neva, or the Greater Nevada Field garages — all a short walk to 10 N. Virginia and far easier than circling for street parking on event nights.

If you actually want to learn the steps, come Friday. The dance lesson is the same both nights but Friday has the smaller, lower-pressure crowd.

Pair Saturday Dancing on the River with the City of Reno's separate downtown fireworks display — fireworks launch near the Truckee River around 9:45 PM and are visible from anywhere in the plaza area.

Cypress Reno (East 4th St) and Reno Public Market both run weekly Salsa nights year-round. If Dancing on the River sparks something, those are the follow-ups.

Open-container rules follow the city standard outside the event footprint. Restaurants and bars on Virginia Street are 1 block from the plaza if you want to grab a drink and walk back.

Dogs welcome in the plaza but reconsider Saturday — even though Dancing on the River itself has no fireworks, the City's separate downtown show at ~9:45 PM is audible from the plaza.

Bring a water bottle. July evenings in downtown Reno can still hit 85°F at 7 PM. Public fountains along the Riverwalk are nearby.

Pair It with the Rest of Your July 4 Weekend

Suggested stack for July 4: Watch the 4th on Fourth Parade (10 AM, 4th Street) in the morning, take an afternoon break, head to City Plaza for Dancing on the River at 6 PM, then catch the downtown fireworks around 9:45 PM without ever leaving the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dancing on the River 2026?
Dancing on the River is a free, all-ages outdoor dance party at City Plaza (also called Believe Plaza) in downtown Reno on Friday July 3 and Saturday July 4, 2026, both nights from 6:00 to 10:00 PM. It's themed around America's 250th birthday and presented by LocalBot AI and the City of Reno. DJs play continuous music, a free all-levels dance lesson runs at 6:30, and local dance studios perform at 7:30 and 8:30.
Where exactly is Dancing on the River held?
City Plaza, also known as Believe Plaza, at 10 N. Virginia Street in downtown Reno. It's the public plaza around the BELIEVE sign right by the Truckee River. Portions of Virginia Street operate as pedestrian space during event hours.
How much does Dancing on the River cost?
Free. No tickets, no registration, no cover. Come and go anytime between 6 and 10 PM. Food and drink purchases at nearby downtown restaurants and bars are paid separately.
What is the schedule for Dancing on the River?
Both nights run the same format: 6:00–6:30 PM DJ warmup and open dancing. 6:30 PM free all-levels dance lesson. 7:30 PM dance performances (set 1) from local studios and groups. 8:30 PM dance performances (set 2) + open social dancing. DJs play continuously 6–10 PM both nights.
Do I need a dance partner?
No. The 6:30 PM dance lesson is designed for all ages and skill levels including first-timers, and the social-dancing portion of the night rotates partners constantly. Come solo, come with friends, come with kids — everyone is welcome on the floor.
Is Dancing on the River family-friendly?
Yes, all ages and family-friendly. It's an outdoor plaza event in a public space, very come-and-go. Plan to wrap up by 9:30 if young kids are tired — the event continues to 10 but doesn't have a structured finale that you'd miss.
Is there a fireworks finale at Dancing on the River?
No — Dancing on the River itself does not include fireworks. However, the City of Reno hosts a separate downtown fireworks display Saturday July 4 launched from near the Truckee River that's visible from anywhere downtown including the Believe Plaza area. The dance party wraps at 10 PM and the downtown fireworks run separately around the same window. See our /4th-of-july-reno guide for the full fireworks-show breakdown.
Where should I park for Dancing on the River?
Downtown public garages are your best bet — Whitney Peak garage, Cal Neva, or the Greater Nevada Field garages are all a short walk from 10 N. Virginia St. Avoid trying to park directly on Virginia Street, which operates as pedestrian space during the event. Ride-share or RTC RAPID bus also works well.
Can I bring food and drinks?
Outside food is generally fine in the plaza. Alcohol policy follows the city's standard — open-container is restricted in public spaces outside the event footprint. Downtown restaurants and bars on Virginia Street are 1-block-or-less away if you want to walk for food or drinks during the night.
Who is hosting Dancing on the River 2026?
Presented by LocalBot AI and the City of Reno as part of the America 250 celebration. Official event listings: downtownreno.org, visitrenotahoe.com, and the Facebook event page.
